OUR THREE PRESS MODELS.

MODELS & PRICES

An etching press is a manual tool for creating mass-produced prints from etched plates. By applying high pressure, the press transfers ink from the die onto paper to create a mirror image of the engraved design. Engraving presses are used by artists, craftsmen, teachers, hobbyists and professional printers to create a wide variety of artworks, illustrations and printed images.

The choice of model depends above all on the print formats you wish to print, but also on your daily use: educational press to be transported regularly or press installed permanently.

FELT DIAPERS

What does it do ?

Felt is a material made from natural wool fibers agglomerated under heat, water and pressure. Engravers traditionally print with two felts, especially for intaglio techniques. They ensure even pressure distribution and better adhesion between die and paper, as well as allowing the sheet of paper to pick up the ink from the metal barbs.

Note that the more “soft” material we have between the cylinder and the plate, the better we distribute the effort. To gain in pressure, some engravers use only a pad to concentrate the pressure on a small surface; some even print without a pad, depending on the technique! To each his own!

Frequently ask questions

What techniques are used with presses?

All techniques are compatible with our presses, since they are gear-shifted. This gearing allows high pressure to be exerted, while reducing the effort required on the crank, for a comfortable movement. For intaglio, photoengraving or blacksmithing, you can remove a pad or pull without a pad to recover more pressure and guarantee deep blacks.

Here you will find a guide to press adjustment. For linocut or woodcut, it’s imperative to use guides of the same thickness as the die on which the cylinder is adjusted, otherwise the cylinder won’t be able to “climb the stairs”. For soft engraving (zinc or copper engraving, for example), a dry “cuvette” test should be carried out. This allows you to see if the embossed impression is constant all around the plate. The number of langes used also has an impact on the expected quality of prints, depending on the technique.

If the press is in an apartment, a school or a small workshop, it’s a good idea to place it on a wheeled workbench, so that you can move the press and the engraving equipment – which can be stored under the workbench, in one go. I myself use the BROR sideboard model from the Swedish giant whose name I won’t mention !

Here you’ll find a press maintenance guide : zones to grease for happy mechanics! A few warnings: don’t store the press in a damp place / don’t screw the press into a workbench that isn’t completely flat / don’t use the platen as a shelf by storing weight on it.

Some make templates with a sheet of gridded rhodoid, or with their recurring die formats. Others use scotch tape to mark themselves, while still others write directly on the board. Everyone has their own way of working and habits, so it’s up to you to make the tool your own !
